Note

Mary Dwyer arrived in Launceston in 1853 on board the "Northumberland". She came from County Clare, Ireland as a free settler. At the time of her arrival she had no education or trade, signed her name with an X and was employed by W McDonald of Launceston as a domestic servant at 29 Pounds per annum. Her first marriage was to Samuel Robinson, but after his disppearance from the records nothing is known of her until 1862. In 1862 she remarried John Holt and on their marriage certificate her name appears as Elizabeth Thomas and it was stated she was a widow. Her three sons by Samuel Robinson all took the name of Holt, from their step-father. Her son James' family discarded the name Holt and reverted back to Robinson. Mary married a third time, in 1879, to Thomas Prest (also known as Youl). At the time of her death in 1890, she owned half of Launceston. In her will, she left her estate to her three sons (William, John and James) and refers to them as Holt. |
